Hyderabad

Spent the weekend in Hyderabad. Some thoughts ...

1. Looking at cities like Hyderabad, who'll believe Indians had mastered city planning some 5000 years ago!

2. Couple of interesting sartorial preferences at the Salar Jung Museum.
a. A 19th century Italian sculptor thinks of the Biblical character Rebecca's (Wife of Issac) modesty and comes up with the stunning veiled statue.
b. And there were these statues (17th century, I think) of Vishnu with his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi. Only the former wore a bodice. hmm ... why impose contemporary class differences (however real) on imaginary gods?

3. And while at Charminar, among a sea of eyes, of burqa clad women, one wonders which century are we living in.

The museum is pretty well maintained. It even has a food court!

In contrast, the museum at Jaganmohan Palace in Mysuru had horrible lighting. It reflected off the paintings!
